I did a thing
Guys, I did a (super fun, kinda intimidating) thing this week!
A couple weeks ago I just happened to be paying attention at the right time to realize that one of my new favorite authors was having a book-signing event at an independent bookstore not too far from where I work. I cast a net (via facebook of course) to attempt to gather some folks to go with me, but received zero responses (apparently none of them like fun).
And for the first time in a long time, that didn't deter me. There wasn't a moment where I doubted I would go. I shrugged it right off and decided to go by myself, and then I actually did.
This sounds so dumb written down, but I can count on one hand the number of times I've actually decided to just go do something social by myself. I can narrow it down even further if I factor in the volume of self-doubt that usually goes along with such a choice.
So I went, and I got to meet Samantha Irby (of Meaty and We Are Never Meeting in Real Life fame) ...IN REAL LIFE. I was maybe just a little excited, and potentially jittery when I finally raised my hand during the Q&A to ask her the question I was dying for her to answer: if she ever thought her dead demon cat is haunting her (she hadn't previously, but will now apparently...whoops).
The crowd was adorable, everyone was a real big fan, the vibe was super chill, the bookstore itself is unspeakably cute (shoutout Brookline Booksmith, keep Coolidge Corner weird!), and I had a blast.
Proof of all of the above jabbering:
Please excuse my "geeking out" face...
And then she signed my book saying "You're Amazing" and it made my day (...week, year, life?).
In other news, I also had a super fun time celebrating my girlfriend's 30th birthday last weekend. I amused myself (read: overstayed my welcome) by teasing her for being ancient like me finally, but also stuffed myself silly with all the amazing foods like I usually do when she and I get together. We had a mouth-watering dinner at a glamorous Farm-to-Table restaurant and I had my very first New York bagel and it was, in fact, all it was hyped to be. It has ruined all other bagels for me (good thing I swore them off years ago).
That's all I've got this week. Life is good if you open yourself up to it and do the things you love without shame or doubt even when it feels like your world is being turned upside down regularly. 🙃
When was the last time you did something that surprised yourself? What did you get up to this week? Let's chat!
